The National Archaeological Museum of Chiusi, founded in 1871, was only transferred to the Neoclassical building which contains it today in 1902. It was doubled in size in 1932 to contain the material from the Paolozzi and Mieli Servadio Collections, then it was damaged during the Second World War and nationalized in 1963. The most recent arrangement of the Museum was carried out in 1992 and has been divided into three sections.
The first section is dedicated to the history of archaeological research in Chiusi in the past, the creation of the Museum itself and documentation on the activity of falsification of finds, which flourished in the 19th century. The central section concentrates on the development of local artistic craft activities: the Canopic boxes (anthropomorphic burial urns produced in large numbers by the inhabitants of Chiusi), funerary sculpture, bucchero vases and architectural terracottas are of particular interest. The third and topographical section contains the finds from the more recent excavations with reconstructions of the articulated phenomenon of the urbanization of Chiusi, the development of the urban necropolis and the way the countryside around Chiusi was populated. A laboratory for restoration is attached to the Museum.
