"We would like to get on stage and play something new and different
every night" said Tim Berne, talking about the new trio with bass player Drew
Gress and drummer Tom Rainey. Paraphrase was formed to develop the close
instrumental interplay and express the common theme that links three of the most
skilful new jazz protagonists around today. Berne's approach is typical of a
musician determined to explore the relationship between composition and
improvisation, and with a fertile writing talent that has found acclaim in such
groups as Caos Totale, Miniature and Bloodcount. Gress and Rainey have had an
equally varied history, the former having been a partner of Dave Douglas in the
well-known String Group, the latter a member of the New And Used quintet from its
outset together with Douglas, Mark Feldman, Andy Laster and Kermit Driscoll. As
regards the research of new paths in the jazz and improvisational fields,
Paraphrase is on a par with all of their past groups.
