Among the many groups directed by Steve Coleman, Five Elements is
the closest to afro-american heritage. If compared to the Babel-like Mystic
Rhythm Society and the explosive rap band Metrics, Five Elements is a five piece
group, therefore more easily able to connect with their roots and rework
traditional styles and formulas. Their repertoire includes be-bop classics and
Coltranish atmospheres. Steve Coleman has been one of the key figures in modern
jazz since his days with the M' Base movement. Modern jazz owes him a great deal
due to his approach of constant innovation giving rise to music that follows the
contemporary scene and at the same time can contain the most varied influences,
without losing anything in terms of the old and essential "black energy".
