Guitarist Vernon Reid has been the leader of Living Colour, one of
the most influential groups of the mid-90's American scene. Nevertheless, he had
already showed his total stylistic and expressive freedom since he was a member
of Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society and subsequently on "Smash and
Scatteration" with another guitar virtuoso who was to leave an indelible mark,
Bill Frisell. After bringing the experience with Living Colour (the group that
Mick Jagger took under his wing) to an end, Vernon Reid has undertaken a new
project, halfway between jazz and hip-hop, under the protection and guidance of
Teo Macero, former mentor of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.
Armed with guitar, sampler, tightrope walking percussions and acrobatic horns,
our hero has begun to paint a great musical fresco inspired by the loud
interethnic crossover of our times. "Mistaken Identity" , the most recent
recorded documentation of his new identity, contains only sixteen of the forty
songs included in the Masque repertoire: we are looking forward to listening to
the others on this occasion.
